Anti- Aids Health Workers to Dispense 2.5billion Condoms in South Africa

As part of the largest anti- aids campaign in the world, thousands of health workers and volunteers will assist in handing out 2.5 billion condoms and test 15 million people for HIV in South Africa. It is notable that South Africa is the country which records the highest number of HIV cases in the world.

The South African Government launched an anti-AIDS campaign last year. The Government is making endeavors to ensure that new infections are reduced by half. It has also pledged that 80% of those who need AIDS drugs gain access to them by 2011.

The Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi has enroped 9,000 retired South African doctors and health workers to lend a helping hand in testing and counseling during the campaign.

Universities have been requested to allow their final-year medical students to participate in the first week of the campaign.

As a part of the campaign each person who undertakes the HIV counseling and testing will be given 100 male condoms.

1 billion condoms will be disseminated among public facilities.

To prepare for the football World Cup tournament in South Africa, condoms will also be distributed to fans among the FIFA-accredited hotels.

The campaign will commence on April 15.
