It has been revealed in a recent study conducted at Manitoba Institute of Child Health that diabetes thought to be prevalent among adults is tightening its grip on children, especially aboriginals.
In the study, it was found that between April, 2006 and March, 2008, Canada witnessed 345 cases of Type 2 diabetes in children, in which 44% were with aboriginal heritage. It was funded by Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health and Canadian Diabetes Association
The lead author of the study, Dr. Heather Dean stated that the rise in the diabetic children will concern “workforce productivity” and ”health-care system”.
This disease has been found to be associated with health disorders like obesity and with a noticeable elevation in its rate; diabetes is affecting kids too.
According to the study, it has been found that the most of the kids were of 13 years of age and also few among the observed were lesser than 10 years of age. It was also revealed that 95% of the kids having who were obese were suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
The study is being predicted to open new doors for the treatment options for preventing childhood obesity and other health related problems that occur due to the same.
Dr. Shazhan Amed, another author of the study said that the study will help combating Type 2 diabetes in children.
