Information is being spread that if diagnosed early, breast cancer can be cured and life of the patient can be saved.
This awareness is being raised by the free breast cancer awareness clinics that are set up in Family Medicine Centre of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. These clinics are set up on every last Saturday of every month. These clinics aim at persuading females to go for regular checkups frequently apart from the anxiousness shown by them during breast cancer awareness month of October.
The campaign has been christened as "Act Now, Don't Wait for October". The campaign also makes the females aware of breast health education with evaluation of their own breast.
A female who had come for the check up at one such clinic shared that the free clinical checkups are a good way of roping in females for being well aware of the disease.
The Oncology Services Manager of AKUHN David Makumi, said that it is really necessary that female above 20 years of age should know how to examine their breasts for any signs of cancer every month. It was also advised that one in a year it should be made compulsory for women to go for a clinical breast examination by a doctor. David said that in its early stages, the disease can be cured by minor treatments and breast conservation surgery can also be avoided.
