“I'm guilty of the crimes ... I accept full responsibility for my actions “, said 28 years old Albert Gonzalez, the “most prolific commercial hacker” known, who has been sentenced for 20-years in jail. He was pleading for lenience in his second hearing in front of Federal Judge Douglas Woodlock, who concluded the sentence after two other judges evaluated the case.
Hacking earned the accused some really big supercars, fancy jewellery and big bucks. This crime affected estimated ten million credit card owners, who were robbed by Albert.
Gonzalez was technically gifted and so sharp that at one point of time he was hired for helping US intelligence for tracking out other hackers. Initially, in 2003, Gonzalez was arrested for hacking following which he approved to become a government informant.
The companies he attacked while being at that post were supermarket 7-Eleven and Barnes & Noble bookshop and clothing retailer TJ Maxx by penetrating into credit card details.
This got him apartment in Miami, a BMW and he also managed to throw a birthday party of $75,000. He was caught red handed in a raid that police conducted in his Miami apartment in 2008.
In order to defend the charges, a report was submitted by his psychiatrist who said that the accused is an addict of the Internet and is suffering from a type of autism called Asperger's syndrome
