Police has reported that a crane struck the side and fell against a 25-story commercial building in Lower Manhattan on Saturday evening, sending debris cascading to the ground. However, no injuries were reported by the police, but four buildings and part of a fifth were evacuated and traffic was rerouted as the incident disrupted traffic.
No one was operating the crane when it fell at about 7:30, the police revealed, and some cement dropped off from the building, at 80 Maiden Lane.
The Fire Department is revealed to send several trucks to the scene, and firefighters were on work to secure and remove the crane.
“We tried building up the pressure in the crane to no avail,” said Deputy Assistant Chief Robert Boyle, of the Fire Department. “We’re now at a standstill.”
In addition, it is reported that the crane had been installed to lift mechanical equipment including large cooling units, to the roof of the building, though it was unclear why it was left there at the time as the workers had already gone home and were done for the day.
