General Motors Co GM.UL announced that it would recall about 5,000 heavy duty vans manufactured in February and March and halt its production and sale on account of a risk of engine fires because of a suspected faulty alternator.
Affected vans are reported to include Chevy Express models 2500 and 3500 with vehicle identification numbers (VIN) ranging from A1129327 to A1142523 and GMC Savana models 2500 and 3500 with VINs ranging from A1128784 to A1901915.
GM posted in a notice on Friday it was still working on the process of determining the way to deal with the flaw. Owners are recommended to stop driving the vans, park them away from buildings and other vehicles and disconnect both battery cables, GM said.
In addition, he posted that relatively few of the vans had gone to retail customers with nearly 1,300 reported to have gone to fleet customers when it issued the order to halt their sale and production.
About 1,400 AC Delco replacement alternators are also reported to be recalled and may have been introduced in vehicles in February and March, GM said. The recalled replacement alternators are numbered 15200110, 15288861, 15263859 and 15847291, GM added.
