Special relationship between the UK and US is over: MPs say

An influential group of British MPs declared yesterday that relationship between Britain and the US is no longer particularly special.

The Foreign Affairs Select Committee said that Britain must reconsider its so-called 'special relationship' with the US as it has become misleading.

The Committee argued that the phrase ‘special relationship', which was originally coined by Sir Winston Churchill, should be discarded as UK’s influence in the US declined considerably.

The committee emphasized the need of a practical approach towards the relationship.

Commenting on the topic, the committee said, “The use of the phrase 'the special relationship' in its historical sense, to describe the totality of the ever-evolving UK-US relationship, is potentially misleading, and we recommend that its use should be avoided.”

The Committee suggested that Britain is too differential and need to learn to say no to the US more often.
