According to a new proposal, U. S. postal service will remain open on Saturdays but no delivery to businesses and residences will take place. The postal service is planning to cut Saturday service, thereby is expected to save $3.3 billion the first year and $5.1 billion a year by 2020.
USPS Deputy Postmaster Patrick Donahoe said, “Every day, every month, every year this gets delayed, we end up further in the hole”. He shared that a service cut on Saturday will result in loss of approximately 40,000 full time jobs.
The Post Office will be starting this one day service cut in its next fiscal year, which will commence from 1 October.
Ruth Goldway, Chairwoman of the Commission, revealed that after receiving the proposal, the board will open the issue to public comments. The Post Office will face interrogation about job cuts in addition to opposition from unions.
Myke Reid, the union's legislative and Political Director said, “In addition to thousands of jobs lost, there will undoubtedly be an erosion of confidence in the Postal Service's ability to provide the services the public relies on”.
