South Africa, which has more than five million people suffering from HIV/AIDS, is planning to begin a massive countrywide campaign against the deadly disease in April.
According to the country's Health Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, the HIV Counseling and Testing campaign will start on April 15 with a goal of reaching 15 million people by 2011, when tests for rape victims, male circumcision and allocation of condoms will be done on a large scale.
Male circumcision and allotment of condoms has been regarded as main concerns by the Ministry. Each year, South Africa requires 2.5 billion male condoms and 177 million have been bought for the primary phase of the campaign.
BuaNews reported the Minister as saying that 91 million condoms were given out last week.
During the campaign, Motsoaledi said that the department will launch medical male circumcision on a massive scale.
By 2015, about 2.5 million male circumcisions will be carried out and the Minister himself promised to execute 1,000 of them.
The Minister guaranteed that rape victims will no longer require a case number before receiving treatment at health institutions.
He said, "We can no longer allow hospital CEOs to send back rape survivors to the police station to get case numbers first before getting treatment".
Over 4,300 health services will look after the people during the mission, out of which 490 have already been launched.
