Deprived Females Not Aptly Aware of Breast Cancer Symptoms

A recent survey has revealed that females who are not from very well to do families, were found to be with a lesser knowledge of symptoms of breast cancer as compared to the richer ones. This survey by Breakthrough Breast Cancer questioned above 500 women and therefore stated that the problem was a serious one and also “alarming”.

The altered appearance of breasts indicates that there prevail chances of women having breast cancer symptoms; this was roughly identified by 3% of the economically deprived women, whereas in richer sections, 15% females had an accurate knowledge of the same.

The survey also warned that the number of unaware females in “lower socio-economic groups” was as high as one-fourth, as a quarter of the surveyed women could not state any of the symptoms of the disease.

This is a matter of concern as doctors suggest that awareness regarding the disease leading to early detections can result in a help for treating cancer. That is why doctors recommend regular checkups, hospital visits and screening tests for females who are above 50 years of age.

It is being stressed that the issue of awareness-inequality should be handled by arranging education for poorer women. Breast cancer is detected in 4,000 women in Scotland annually and 1000 out of them die.
