Australian Communications Minister Favors Internet Censorship

Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has opined that internet, like books, films and newspapers, should be censored given the fact that it is not "special". He was reported to be assisting it in an interview with Fairfax Media's national Canberra Bureau Chief, Tim Lester.

He denounced the criticism of the web experts who have accused him of releasing misleading information. When asked the percentage of all insecure material available online, which can be blocked by the filters, he tried to move away from the question saying that his filter is 100% accurate and it doesn't encounter any overblocking or underblocking.

However, Mark Newton, an engineer with ISP internode, said that censorship of internet would disable the experts in catching the pedophile thereby adding to the threat the children have been facing.

Mr. Conroy said that the argument which advocates that no law should applied on internet would give way to anarchy among the society, soon.

But Newton argued that this is a clear oversimplification of the issue.

"Why should the internet, a distribution platform for all manner of intangibles, be censored as if it was a movie theatre? It makes no sense", he said.
