Edmonton is haunted by Norovirus infection outbreaks during the holidays. Alberta Health Services has released a warning that a combination of food and family might lead to the infection. Since this is the time when families get together for celebrations and serve food, Norovirus can be transmitted easily.
The virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly through contact or food preparation surfaces. A norovirus infected patient might show signs of vomiting, diarrhea, fever and aches. These usually last for 24 to 48 hours.
Washing hands at intervals especially after and before eating and after using the wash room can prevent the spread of the infection. The patients should stay away from cooking places. These people should also stay away from places of congregation.
There is no specific treatment for the disease but drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration is recommended. The doctors also recommend bed rest and good personal hygiene as a cure for early recovery.
Families that experience an outbreak should not panic as medical attention is rarely necessary and should be sought only if symptoms persist for more than 72 hours or are particularly severe.
