BC Hydro has chosen another group of projects for signing electricity purchase agreements for new sources of electricity. The power authority announced the agreements with the second group of projects on Wednesday.
BC Hydro will now produce 450 gigawatt hours of clean and reliable electricity yearly. It is looking forward to signing agreements with some more power producers in the upcoming weeks. The basic aim of the authority for entering into these agreements is to meet its target of generating 5,000 gigawatt hours of power annually.
Attaining the capability of annually generating 5,000 gigawatt hours of electricity, Hydro will be able to make B. C. self-sufficient in meeting electricity demands by 2016.
Bev Van Ruyven, acting Chief Executive Officer and President of BC Hydro, expressed his confidence in winning the power self-sufficiency in the upcoming years.
"Clean-power call projects will complement electricity purchase agreements awarded in the last year and a half under the Bioenergy Call for Power, the Standing Offer Program", he said.
He also shared that the bilateral agreements with the big industrial players have made BC Hydro reach an efficiency of generating 4,300 GWh of clean electricity annually.
