Distributing raw milk has been stated as a crime because it refers to deliberately spread health hazards, the law of banning the distribution of same is receiving mixed reactions from the consumers, suppliers and the public health offices.
B. C Supreme Court Justice Miriam Gropper in one decision cited the law with B. C.'s Public Health Act and stated that the law "prohibits a person from willingly causing a health hazard."
The interstate trading of the raw milk was termed against law three years back by the Federal officials. A "warning letter" was issued by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on Feb. 8, 2007. The letter said that Forest Grove Dairy "distributes unpasteurized raw milk and cream in interstate commerce, in finished form for human consumption." This implied that federal Public Health Service Act was being violated by the dairy.
It has been found that about 24 people fell ill after consuming unpasteurized raw milk that was supplied by Forest Grove Dairy to the Family Farm Cooperative at Vandalia. The reason for the illness was campylobacteriosis, which refers to the disorder caused by the ingestion of Campylobacter bacteria. The trading of the milk to Michigan thus, was ceased.
