Grocery stores in Calgary are beleaguered by the recent incidents of food-tampering. Police announced on Friday that since January, 9 grocery stores have now been hit till now by 11 separate incidents.
Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson, while announcing the two recent incidents, said that the police believe that the fresh "food-tampering" was the work of "copycats".
Hanson said, "We're frustrated because a few idiots who, for motives that are known only to them, are causing so much anxiety, putting so many people potentially at risk". He was positive that the police will catch the culprits.
It was in January that the whole "food-tampering" incidents started to occur. The episodes rapidly started to happen all over the city, where stores like Sobeys, Safeway, Superstore and Buy-Low stores came under its target.
In the latest case, a female purchased some fruit from a Shawnessy neighborhood Superstore, to prepare a smoothie for her 22 month old infant. The metal pieces were noticed by the mother just before they were about to drink their smoothies. No one was hurt.
Police have requested people to be watchful in checking the grocery items before they buy them. In all the cases, metal pieces have been put into the foodstuff.
