Finding a relevant health insurance plan has become much more difficult than finding a job in today’s time. According to statistics, young adults aged 19 to 29 make up one-third of the population without health insurance, as their jobs do not offer health insurance because they start their careers in part-time, temporary or low-level positions.
The Commonwealth Fund, an independent non-profit research group, has defied the common notion that young adults are healthy and do not need health insurance.
According to the research conducted “one in six young adults has a common chronic condition such as high blood pressure, asthma or cancer. One in four is obese. And one in six will end up in the ER this year”.
As they are uninsured, young adults often fail to prevent future health complications and end up in the ER which is the most expensive form of treatment. As the hospitals have to treat them, but because they are uninsured, hospitals, insurers and taxpayers end up with the bill.
The health care legislation that is coming into action will now provide insurance coverage to young adults.
A variety of options will be made available to young adults, like the family health care plan for individuals until the age of 19 or 25 who are attending school. A health insurance exchange will provide Medicare to those making less than $14,400.
