The Medical Council of India (MCI) is reported to be in process to track the identities of 200-odd doctors who recently went on a trip to Istanbul sponsored by two pharmaceutical giants namely Piramal Healthcare and Dr Reddy's Laboratories.
"We have come to know that Piramal Healthcare and Dr Reddy's Laboratories had taken about 200 doctors to Turkey for a conference on diabetes. We are now looking for these doctors," said Dr Ketan Desai, president, MCI.
It is reported that both the companies have refused to unveil the names of the doctors.
With such an attitude, they are now seeking the aid from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), asking it to practice its powers as the drug giants are under their control and as they are not disclosing any names.
However, sources in the DCGI affirmed that the letters were given to the companies, seeking information on doctors allegedly sponsored by them.
The incident emerges a month following MCI decision to restrict doctors from accepting any sort of favors i. e. gifts, travel facilities or hospitality from pharmaceutical firms.
