Younger Women with Cancer Carry High Risk of Mutation

It was reported by researchers, on Monday that younger breast cancer patients who have a mutation in the eminent BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are four times as probable to get cancer in the other breast like nearly all patients.

Researchers also found that the younger a woman was at her first diagnosis, there were more chances of developing tumors in her other breast.

This has basically revealed that testing for BRCA mutations is vital in women less than 40 years of age, if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Kathleen Malone of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, who led the study stated, "For young women with breast cancer, our results reinforce the message that early onset disease is much more likely to be associated with a BRCA mutation".

It was found that women with a mutation in the BRCA1 gene had 4.5 times the danger of cancer growth in the second breast, and those with a BRCA2 mutation had 3.4 times the danger, in comparison to women without the mutations.

Researchers said that when the younger a woman is diagnosed, the risks to have one of the mutations are higher.

According to the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, 1.3 million novel breast cancer cases are diagnosed yearly and it kills 465,000 women a year.

This makes it the foremost worldwide cancer causing the death of women.
