It has been reported that over 71 million doses of H1N1 vaccine might be required to be disposed of countrywide.
The Wisconsin State Health Department got around two million vaccines.
So far, over 378,000 doses of the nasal mist have been discarded because they have expired.
Six months back, health departments were not able to get their hands on adequate vaccine or when there was hurry to get it.
But now, after a huge vaccination campaign at the state and federal level, some of the vaccines that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were struggling to produce in a rush, are about to expire.
Ricki Krautkramer of the Brown County Health Department said, "We believe we could have given a lot more vaccine if it would have been readily available".
At present, Brown County has around 2,200 vaccines. About two weeks back, it had to dispose of 180.
It is expected that at the end of the month, another 600 will perish.
Krautkramer said that there's still a risk. There might be a third bout of flu mid-spring in summers.
The City of Appleton has already dumped 500 vaccine doses as another 500 wait, to be used.
The left over vaccines, both in Brown County and Appleton, will last through next year. But all these vaccine doses will seem worthless in the next fall, when H1N1 will be part of the seasonal flu shot.
