Ex-Surgeon Patel's Trial Costs Queensland Government $2.75 Million

The Government of Queensland has revealed the figures that it has spent so far in the trial of Jayant Patel, who is an ex-surgeon from Bundaberg. The Queensland Government has claimed that the amount has exceeded $2.75 million.

In the trial, 59 year old Patel pleaded “not guilty” to unlawfully killing 3 of his patients; and to causing grievous physical harm to another person during his tenure as the Director of Surgery in Southern Queensland’s Bundaberg Hospital.

Earlier in the day, it was alleged in the Supreme Court trial that the accused, Patel, assured an ailing patient of good results if he underwent an intricate surgical operation, but two days after the surgery, the patient died.

Carolyn Waters, a Renal Nurse at the Bundaberg Hospital, testified as a witness to the said-conversation that took place between Patel and Mr. Phillips, before his surgery.

Mandy McDonald, another nurse who testified against Patel, told the court that before surgery, the accused called a note carrying details in the patient's file, as “necessary” in case of a lawsuit.

The nurse told the court when she asked about the note that Mr. Patel wrote about Mr. Phillips prior to his surgery, he responded to her by saying that “it was necessary as you never knew when you might get sued”.
