The US Airways-United Airlines Merger: How Beneficial is it?

Mergers are what airlines seem to be very interested in nowadays. Whether it is because of the recession hurt or some other reason is still not known, but it is pretty apparent that the general public, the overall industry and the businesses themselves have high hopes from these mergers.

The latest in a range of such mergers has come in the form of the major coming together of US Airways and United Airlines, and although there is still time till the merger happens, the markets are already very happy. Talks about a possible coming together sent shares of US Airways Group soaring by about 10% and those of United Airlines rose by 6.75%.

Looking at the current situation, it would be easy to say that the merger is going to work wonders, not just for investors, but for the general public as well. But one must bear in mind that the airline industry is very unpredictable, and what might seem true today could end up as the exact opposite the very next day.

While it is true that the merger would create the nation's second largest airline after Delta Air Lines Inc., all those expecting very high things and looking to invest in shares which are currently soaring should tread very carefully. While a US Air and United Airlines merger could be good from the synergies and cost saving point of view, there are no guarantees that it would successfully work.

No one is promising that travelers will be jumping aboard.

Moreover, both the companies are being unusually secretive about the terms of the merger and all negotiations and it is certainly making us suspicious.

Let's just try and give the merger a little more time into operations before taking a final call.
