FDA Assessing Antibacterial Chemical Extensively Used in Soaps and Body Washes

FDA, out of concern, has planned to evaluate products which are used on a daily basis because of an antibacterial chemical named ‘triclosan’ which is widely used in products such as hand soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics, body soaps, toys, furniture and clothing.

There are numerous questions that pop up and the experts have tried their hands at explaining the doubts which everyone has had.

Triclosan is a chemical which is added to a lot of products because it has antibacterial action which is supposed to keep infections away.

Triclosan has been extensively used for no less than 40 years. The Soap and Detergent Society’s spokesperson Brian Sansoni said that earlier, triclosan was merely used in heath care settings such as medical houses or hospitals. Triclosan is being used in consumer hygiene products for the last 15 years.

Now the major question is - what prompted FDA to investigate the matter and what is the amount of damage that triclosan can create upon everyone’s life and health?

FDA seems to have taken this timely action after it received a letter from the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, Rep. Edward J. Markey.

In the letter, Markey highlighted the increase in usage of triclosan in consumer products such as all the personal care products which everyone uses each day.

However, FDA has reverted to the letter by saying that triclosan has never been known to create danger for humans.
