A recent study cited in the journal Circulation suggested that moderate intake of alcohol can help lessen the risks of heart disease, however it should be noted that heavy drinking of alcohol does not help rather can carry many other health threats. It has been found that taking a drink or two a day can prove helpful in maintaining a healthy heart in older ones.
This was highlighted by Dr. Alberto Ascherio of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and colleagues. These researchers observed the data from eight studies from North America and Europe. This encompassed
192,000 females and nearly 75,000 males.
For younger people, the study could not reach a conclusion because heart diseases are lesser in men under 40 and women under 50.
It was then found that the on an average men of 50 years of age and women of 54 years observed for their drinking habits were found to be free from any cardiovascular disease.
So, it was concluded that per day having 30 grams of alcohol sliced the risk of having heart diseases in females by 42% while for males it was 31%. Ascherio and his colleagues also stated that “protective effects of alcohol” are more active in older people.
