New Health Centre for Aboriginal Children in Chilliwack River Valley
Chilliwack River Valley

After much negotiation for more than two years, the Canadian Government has finally announced the establishment of a healing centre for aboriginal children in Chilliwack River Valley.

The Minister of Children and Family Development Mary Polak and Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner were present at the Stehiyaq site along with aboriginal leaders and staff at the inauguration of the centre. The aboriginal care centre will administer the treatment of the first 10 young people in May.

Stehiyaq is the first youth centre in B. C. to have contemporary and traditional aboriginal healing techniques. The future ventures in the aboriginal care centre will be developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Stehiyaq leaders.

The plans for the development of the centre had been in action since years. In March 2008, Campbell visited the site around Chilliwack lake road for delivering a cheque worth $1.5 million for the purchase of the property.

However, a lot many controversies and issues crept up in November 2008. Following this, the media were once again called in for visiting the site as it approached towards completion.
