The telephone service is most likely to crash every time a big storm strikes Port Renfrew, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Mike Hicks, the Regional Director of Juan de Fuca met with Telus officials, this Friday. He shared that the company had committed to pick up one-third of the $100,000 cost to install a local phone button in the remote community.
Hicks has proposed to hit up the provincial as well as federal governments for the other $66,000. He said, "If that fails, you might see me playing the guitar in front of the liquor store, trying to raise the money".
Port Renfrew's residents can call one another with the help of this switch, in case the town's connection to the outer world is knocked down by the wind. The switch will enable them to reach the ambulance service or firehall, which, if necessary, will have a satellite phone to call for extra help.
The residents of Port Renfrew had been complaining of the frequent disruption to telephone service due to storms. Telus Spokesman Shawn Hall shared that this solution will definitely work.
