Union Seems to be Pushing Back on Verizon-Frontier Deal

New problems are now being faced by Verizon Communications Inc.'s decision to cut down some significant portion of its landline phone system.

By the middle of the ongoing year, the New York based telecommunications major is expecting to close a deal valued at $8.6 Million to sell as many as 4.8 million landlines across 14 states to Frontier Communications Corp. Generally, Verizon is a pro when it comes to closing such deals, but this time around, there could be quite a few complications, a union opposition being the biggest.

The deal is being fiercely opposed by the Communications Workers of America union because it is concerned that the spinoff would end up being placed as a heavy financial burden on Frontier and it would lead to cutting of many jobs.

While the union strongly believes that it will be able to block the deal, there are few who share this belief. A delay, however, has good chances of happening and this would end up costing Verizon as it would have to continue spending on maintenance of these landlines.

"Everything the union and others have brought up we've been able to shoot down with immediacy", said Steve Crosby, Senior Vice President for Government and Regulatory Affairs at Frontier, and a Verizon spokesman Peter Thonis has stressed that the deal would be closed for sure by the middle of this year.

Both the companies do not have any plans of backing down in the least.
