Proposed “Obesity Tax” on Sugary Drinks Opposed by New Yorkers

According to a new poll a majority of voters are against Governor David Paterson's proposed "obesity tax" on non-diet soda and other sugary drinks. This "obesity tax" was proposed by the governor on non diet and sugary drinks in order to try to raise money to fill the budget deficit.

The Quinnipiac University poll shows that 60 % of the New York state residents are against the tax being charged while 58 % of the people who said they prefer to drink diet drinks over regular drinks also said they were against the tax.

The poll break up showed that 54 % of Democrats said they were opposed to the tax, 72 % of the Republicans were not in favor of it while 59 % of the independent voters were against the tax. The proposal is now in the legislature's hands.
