After Orkut, now the widely popular social networking website Twitter is to permit advertising for the first time from today.
Twitter initiate featuring ads on its microblogging service cited to be a part of the company's effort to turn its popularity into boosting profits.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone launched its new advertising platform, under the name Promoted Tweets, on the company's blog.
Companies seeking advertisements for their company form the social cite have to buy 'Promoted Tweets' that will appear on Twitter's search results pages.
Twitter posts that these are just ordinary tweets that businesses and organizations seek to spread to a wider group of users. It is reported that Coffee chain Starbucks, Sony Pictures and Best Buy can be witnessed to run their ads.
Currently, only one Tweet will appear on each search results page in a softly softly approach the founders hope won't alienate members.
Co-founder Biz Stone said today the company wanted promoted messages that 'resonated with users' and formed part of conversations.
He added, "If users did not interact with them by replying, 'favoriting' them or retweeting them, the posts would 'disappear".
Until now, the micro-blogging website founders had shown reluctance to introduce this advertising service on their social podium.
This sudden change is signifying that the site is in an urgent bid to boost its revenue.
