CBS News' "Face the Nation" had the Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn saying that Gov. Rod Blagojevich will soon be impeached by the Illinois House. He said that before February 12 - the bicentenary birthday celebration of Abraham Lincoln - Blagojevich will be shown his way out of the office.
The disgraced governor was arrested December 9, following the allegations of shaking down a hospital executive for campaign donations, and designing to trade the Senate seat, vacated by the President-elect Barack Obama, for profit.
Denying any wrongdoing, the governor has refused to step down and has said that he would fight the charges against him.
The probable impeachment of Blagojevich is already under consideration by an Illinois House committee, which would be taking up the matter again Monday. If the House acts on the impeachment of the governor, a trial will be moved in the Illinois Senate, and with two-thirds majority voting the governor would be convicted.
Quinn expects "far more" than two-thirds of voting to see the governor out. The lieutenant governor, who has not spoken to Blagojevich for more than two years, will become governor after Blagojevich vacates the office.
If he becomes the acting governor, Quinn said he would press the Legislature to pass a bill, mking allowance for a temporary appointee in place of Obama before a special state election in June on a successor, thereby ensuring that Illinois "has two senators at all times."
