On Monday night, about 50 people, counting six cancer survivors gathered for the Scotland County Relay for Life kickoff, they talked about strategies for the event of 2010 and to be motivated to, “Go for the Gold”. It was held at the W. R. Dulin Center at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
It is said that, this year’s Relay for Life will be held in Oct 1-2. And the theme is "Teaming Up for a Cure".
Last year, Scotland County surpassed earlier years by collecting $280,071.59. And from this amount about $213,262.42 was raised by the 39 teams that had taken part.
Co- Chairman Stewart Thomas stated, "For the second consecutive year Scotland County received the number one in nation per capita in our population category".
The Power of Hope Award was also presented for the most survivors on path to march the opening round. The goal this year is to do more than what was done last year. The captains of the teams defied think about fund collectors.
Stewart Thomas serves as the Relay coach and used the night to motivate team captains and members.
A difference this year was that instead of having a survivor as the speaker, the organizers allowed each survivor in the audience to tell their story. Three took the opportunity to speak.
For registrations individuals can join an existing team or begin their own and sign-up at the subsequent team gathering. Registration is said to be for $5 before August 1 and $10 after.
