Australian Government to Invest $386m in Aged Care Services

Australian Ministry of Ageing has recently reported that Government is planning to invest $386 million in aged care services sector to enhance the efficiency.

The Government has taken the move in view of a number of aged patients spending much time in hospitals. It was found that in 2006, more than 2,400 patients qualified for aged care, kept waiting in hospital beds even after being given relieving letters, with 63% of them waiting for more than 35 days in the respective hospitals.

Also, it has been estimated that around 31% of transfers from aged care homes to hospitals, which accounts to about 27,000 admissions yearly, shall be replaced by GP care in aged care homes.

The Government is also planning to invest $96 million in the next 4 years for improving GP and primary care services in aged care homes.

From 1 July 2012, the Government will be providing a supple financial support to primary health care organizations to evade the target gaps in primary health care for aged Australians.

With this, around 190,000 primary health care services will be added to the existing ones over the next two years.
