Alan Wake's makers want to be recognized as contemporary storytellers, using the video game medium to share their story.

Finnish Company's Head of Franchise Development, Oskari Hakkinen, said that the forthcoming game by Remedy Entertainment, a psychological detective story, comprising a writer whose manuscript is strangely coming true, is pushed forward by its plot.

He says, "We consider ourselves storytellers. And just like back in the day when people used to sit around a campfire and you had the one person that would tell that one beautiful story and everyone would listen to him, we consider ourselves storytellers. Instead of a fire, the Xbox is our kind of medium of telling that story to everyone".

Wake was five years in the making, and Hakkinen said that Remedy has used many well-liked culture sources, including the TV series, Lost and Stephen King's novels, as inspiration for the game.

Hakkinen says that selecting a writer as the game's main protagonist gave the developer storytelling tools, like the manuscript pages dispersed all through the game.

He added that a writer is also a spontaneous storyteller.

Hakkinen said that they wanted an ordinary man, someone people could relate to, not some space marine, or commando or Navy SEAL, which people watch so frequently.

With strong importance on storytelling, Wake has been matched with the PlayStation 3's Heavy Rain.

Hakkinen concluded that Wake won't have any alternative climax. Rather, the focus is on narrating one beautiful story.
