According to the UN, the cholera deaths in Zimbabwe have crossed 1500 and more casualties and deaths were likely to increase.
According to WHO, a total of 26,497 cases of the disease have been reported since August. About two-thirds deaths were reported in the month of December only.
Agency spokesman Paul Garwood, admitted that the cholera outbreak is still out of control. Neighboring countries like South Africa and Botswana should step up the disease monitoring and control campaigns.
Cases of cholera have also been reported from these two countries. At the same time, the U.N. is does not advocate mass vaccination campaigns.
These campaigns have not been of use in the past and provide a false sense of security.
Zimbabwe is affected by the disease as it is a poor state with ineffective health infrastructure, breaking down of sanitation during rainy season. Both these factors combined together have led to the spread of the cholera, which is transmitted through contaminated water supplies.
