Flu and mumps shots recommended

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is advising people to get inoculated against flu and mumps. There was still time for the people to get vaccinated against the diseases. People in the age groups of 13 and 38 should consider getting second shots for protection against mumps.

Canada has faced four recent outbreaks of mumps. The provincial Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is recommending that people born between 1970 and 1995 should check their immunization records. If they have not received two doses of MMR, they should get them. In any case, even an extra dose of the vaccine would not be harmful in any way.

Mumps is a viral illness which spreads by respiratory droplets. It can lead to further complications like meningitis, encephalitis, deafness and swelling of the testicles in males which can lead to sterility.

Mumps is not a childhood disease. It can affect people of any age group. The symptoms include fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches and swelling and pain in the salivary glands.

But MMR is  not recommended pregnant women or for women who are planning a pregnancy sometime in the next three months.
