The slight built, 15-year-old Bronx girl - Sharell Butler - killed two men within three days! She was charged with two homicides - Christopher Umpierre(24) on December 19, and John Hopkins-Drago (22) on December 21.
According to prosecutors, Butler – “Lady Red” in court papers - was charged as an adult on 20 counts, of second degree murder, assault and burglary.
While Umpierre was shot in the chest, when Butler and others invaded his home with the intention of robbery; Hopkins-Drago’s body was stuffed in a garbage bag - the cause of death investigated as stab wounds to his head, torso and extremities.
A spokesman for the office of district attorney, Steven Reed, informed that Butler was charged in Bronx criminal court, and was being held without bail. In both the crimes, she was identified by separate witnesses.
Police said Butler, whose street name is, in fact, “Lady Red”, is a member of the Bloods - a street gang – and has been arrested twice for assaults in the past. She appeared in court looking weary and unkempt, and her right hand was heavily bandaged. She was ordered by Judge Stanley Greene to return to court on Wednesday.
Another person arrested in connection with the stabbing is James Medina (23), who has also been accused of tampering with the crime scene. Prosecutors say it was in Medina’s apartment that Hopkins-Drago was murdered. Indicted on Friday, Medina will be back in court on Monday.
