Obesity Program Should Start as Early as Possible

It has been told by the UCSF experts that the Lets Move campaign was started by US First Lady Michelle Obama. This program focuses on pregnant women, infants and pre-school age children. They also said that the program should be started as soon as possible.

Janet Wojcicki, PhD, MPH, UCSF Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and Melvin Heyman, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Pastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at UCSF Children’s Hospital discussed how this Lets Move campaign could have a reverse impact on the childhood obesity outbreak in the New England Journal of Medicine.

It the Lets Move campaign the First Lady summarized anti-obesity strategies. She said that the program would include nutritional labeling of the products which would be done by the US Department of Agriculture, improvement in the nutritional standards of school lunches, enhancing opportunities for children to engage in physical activities and developing high quality food access.

"These types of behavioral and nutrition interventions in schools or within the home have only limited success in preventing weight gain in children. Obesity prevention must start as early as possible, since school-age children already have an unacceptably high prevalence of obesity and associated medical conditions", said the authors.
