It is said that genetic disorders can be prevented, if babies have three parents.
Babies with three biological parents could be conceived in three years, following studies that could prevent kids from inheriting severe illnesses.
Newcastle University Scientists have developed human embryos after integration of DNA from two fertilized eggs, with a method that could soon be applied to avert severe genetic problems that affect around 100 children in UK every year.
It is said that the child would inherit genetic material from the mother and father who would provide 99.8% of its DNA, with a small quantity from the mitochondrial donor.
To place embryos created this way into a womb is said to be illegal in UK, but the Health Secretary can withdraw the ban without legislating.
Leading Researcher, Alison Murdoch stated, “I don’t think we have the information yet to go to the Secretary of State. But we think the time is right to enter discussions about what information will be required for the Secretary of State to make that provision”.
In this technique, embryos are produced by IVF, using the mother’s eggs and her partner’s sperm.
It is said that scientists are looking forward to improved results with normal embryos, rather than abnormal ones thrown after IVF.
Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign have funded the research.
