Australia - Richard Gasquet is determined to turn around his once-promising tennis, with the aim of catching up with on-fire contemporaries Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in 2009.
"I've beaten them before in the past and I'm sure I can beat them and come back into the Top 10," he said of the world number three and four players. "I was there last year so that's my goal."
The Frenchman, who once stood among the elite in seventh place but is now ranked 25th, has already begun fine-tuning for his ATP start next week at the Brisbane International. A knee injury last season didn't help his overall prospects.
Gasquet arrived recently in Queensland with a new coach after splitting with his former mentor. He is now trained by Guillaume Peyre, who guided Marcos Baghdatis to the
2006 Australian Open final.
"I was four years with my last coach and it was maybe too long," said Gasquet. "I needed a change. I'd like to play well in this tournament."
Also in the field headed by Djokovic is the 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfriend Tsgonga as well as Baghdatis, another European trying to pull his game together in the new year after injury.
Gasquet is scheduled to prepare for the January 19 start of the Open in Melbourne by playing Brisbane followed by Sydney. (dpa)
