Sony has confirmed its launch of a 3D firmware update for PS3 consoles, ahead of the official UK release of its new 3D television set in June.
This is said to facilitate PS3 consoles to support 3D gaming, with a variety of 3D transformed titles in progress, including Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet.
Later this year, an added firmware update to make PS3s compatible with 3D Blu-ray movies will be made available.
By means of the 'active' glasses technology, the Sony BRAVIA HX803 will be Sony's first 3D television set to arrive in the UK market. The product will support 1080p HD 3D pictures and up-converts normal pictures into 3D.
It is said that, for some period the set will come packaged with two pairs of 3D glasses and a PSN voucher for a free experience in 3D gaming.
The company has also verified plans to film 25 games from the World Cup (including the final) in 3D, under a rights contract with football world governing body, FIFA.
Sony is planning to stage a string of public viewings for clients to watch the 3D World Cup games, and will also run promos featuring 3D highlights from the matches at Sony-affiliated stores around Britain.
Later this year, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will unveil a certified 3D FIFA World Cup compilation film on 3D Blu-ray disc.
