The everyday attendance is about 15,000 more as compared to the past year and curfews have been extended for an hour. As many as 7 artists are missing their gigs and are stuck in Britain all thanks to a thick cloud of volcanic ash.
The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which is to run for 3 whole days, is still paying out to complete sellout crowds during the weekend and breaking all attendance records, as has been shared by festival officials.
The festival, promoted by Goldenvoice, is now running its 11th year and every single day, is drawing a record 75,000 music lovers to the Empire Polo Club in Indio an otherwise deserted community.
The record breaking turnout and an hour's extension in curfew, which is now 1 AM instead of midnight, are not the only two new developments at the festival. Promoters were overly concerned about the eruption of an Icelandic volcano and the huge ash cloud that has resulted. Flights in and out of Britain have been halted because of it, an addition to those to and fro from northern Europe.
As has been shared by a festival spokeswoman, 7 artists have been grounded in Britain, including Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, which had been touring Europe. Cribs and Frightened Rabbit, the British rock bands, are among the ones unable to get to the US.
"We would have taken any slot, any time, just to play this festival. If you're playing to people who've come to see you at a club show, the battle has been won", said Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison.
