A primary cancer charity has sent out warnings saying that, strategies to raise the amount of cancer nurse experts could be put in danger if the NHS is not able to commit to financing new posts.
As a part of the Labour Party election manifesto launched last week, Gordon Brown's promise to offer one to one committed nursing care for all cancer patients, could see hundreds of more cancer nurse experts posts created, if the party regain authority at the elections in May.
Initially, the MacMillan Cancer Support is to provide funding, which already offers more than 3,000 cancer nursing posts across the UK.
MacMillan Cancer Support would be providing funding, only if the NHS commit that this backing would be sustained despite of the impending public expenses press.
MacMillan Cancer Support Clinical Program Manager, Jacqui Grave, stated, "It can cost around £145,000 to fund each nurse and there is no way we are going to put in 600 extra nurses if the NHS is not going to pick up the funding after that period".
The 2008 survey of the advanced and expert cancer nursing employees revealed, a third of the 2,193 cancer expert nurses in England are funded by MacMillan Cancer Support, including 48 per cent of lung cancer nurse specialists.
