Stacey Simms is suffering due to the inability of the Government to start the kidney transplant program, even though she has a healthy donor in her father Larry. She joins a list of 106 patients who are also waiting for kidney transplants.
It may be recalled that the transplant program had to be suspended after the illness of a surgeon, who was a part of the team doing the transplants. Even though, the doctor resumed work in January, but other considerations have made sure that the program has still not restarted
Don McMorris, the Health Minister claims that the Government aims at restarting the program in the next three or four months. 12 transplant surgeries have been performed in Edmonton, as no transplant has been possible since last July.
When, this important issue was raised in Parliament by NDP, Health Minister McMorris argued that patients needing kidney transplants are being sent out of the province for treatment. He also stressed that the Government was trying to help more and more patients under the prevailing circumstances.
Health Minister McMorris and Premier Brad Wall are supposed to meet kidney patients and their families to resolve the ongoing crisis.
