Food Firms Buckled up To make Drastic Reductions in Salt Usage in Processed Food

Concerning the growing dangers to people's health, US food companies are ready to face another blow with the new regulations from Governmental authorities that may command them to reduce the level of salt that is used in processed food, drastically.

Following the release of an influential report on Tuesday, it was found that deliberate approaches that had been made by food firms could not meet with much success.

Kraft, General Mills and other large producers of processed food have been waiting for the report by the Institute of Medicine, a Federal Health Panel, for clues on how centralized supervisory bodies at the Food and Drug Administration may act.

The report stated that whilst a patchwork of voluntary approaches that had been offered by firms to lessen salt in food were praiseworthy, the attempt was not sufficient to trim down the overall salt content in the US food supply. Over-consumption of salt has been associated with high blood pressure and cardio vascular disease.

Talking of the present scenario, maximum health troubles that people face are related to heart ailments and high BP. With the kind of awareness that the Government and other NGOs have tried to spread amongst people, regarding a connection between heart disease, which is clearly elevated because of high consumption of salty food items does not remain to be a new topic for people in order to understand the intricacies of the same.

The report found that Americans on a regular basis consume 50% more salt every day than levels that have been suggested by federal dietary standards at the FDA.

According to the present regulations, sodium is not considered a product that is harmful on a general aspect. However, the Institute of Medicine called on the FDA to amend that standard, and make a limit on the level of salt that is deemed safe for consumption.
