According to the State's Health Department, more than 60 West Australian children may have had adverse reactions to the flu vaccine. West Australian Health Minister Kim Hames proclaimed that the vaccinations for children under less than five would be stopped, as a number of reactions to the three-strain vaccine were reported, which included swine flu.
Jim Bishop, Australia's Chief Medical Officer cautioned that health professionals nationwide should at once stop immunizing children under five with the vaccine.
A higher-than-expected number of reactions to the vaccine had been reported, according to the West Australian Health Department Chief Health Officer Tarun Weeramanthri.
About 44 children under 10 had presented with feverish convulsions, out of which 23 cases are related to the pediatric flu vaccine, as reported by the Princess Margaret children's hospital.
12 of them were admitted to hospital, whereas, one is in a critical condition subsequent to their reaction to the vaccine. Te details on the children's health are very few, but Dr Weeramanthri assured that they were seriously ill.
Dr Weeramanthri said, "Advice from West Australian clinicians has said that there is a consistent clinical picture that they're seeing, with fever and vomiting around six hours and certainly within 12 hours of vaccination".
