As has been revealed by the World Health Organization, it is now getting ready to send a team of experts to Tajikistan in order to look into a possible polio outbreak in the region.
While the country is actually in Central Asia, the WHO has grouped it into its European area.
The agency, therefore, on Friday shared that it was the first ever outbreak of the diseases which leads to paralysis across Europe since the WHO certified the region as polio free back in 2002.
The organization has shared that figures from the past week have revealed that at least 7 children in Tajikistan have been left paralyzed by polio, which is essentially a waterborne disease, and there are over 100 additional suspected cases.
Tajikistan shares its border with Afghanistan, one of the four world nations where polio is still considered an epidemic.
For every child who is paralyzed as the result of a polio attack, there are many hundreds more who are infected but show no symptoms. They can, however, easily pass on the infection.
