WellPoint Asked to Stop Denying Coverage to the Breast Cancer Patients

Following a report from Reuters about the excuses sought by the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine's parent company, WellPoint, to drop the coverage of the breast cancer patients, U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius has termed this practice as "deplorable". She has directed the health insurance company to stop denying the patients their coverage.

It was stated in a letter, which was written to the WellPoint's Chief Executive Angela Braly, dated April 22, by Sebelius, that the report form Reuters was disappointing. According to the report, company has been trying to cancel policies of females who suffered from breast cancer by aggressive investigation.

The letter read, "As you know, the practice described in this article will soon be illegal", Sebelius wrote. The Affordable Care Act is a legal direction that prohibits insurance companies from withdrawing policies, until unless the case is of fraud or “intentional misrepresentation of material fact".

WellPoint is the most well known and the largest U. S. health insurer, according to the enrollment. In the report, it was said that the company used a computer algorithm that targeted patients who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer specifically.

On the other hand responding to the allegations by Reuter’s story, WellPoint said it did not pick up the breast cancer females intentionally.
