After reports revealed that Continental and United are once again in merger talks, it drew sharp reactions from various quarters in Houston. It was acknowledged that Continental is an important part of Houston community and its overall economic growth.
It may be recalled that the two airlines are once again discussing an alliance after a period of two years. These reports have been declined by representatives from both these airlines who refused to give any comments about these speculations.
Continental Airlines had earlier reaffirmed its commitment to the growth and development of Houston and maintained that the company will continue to have a strategic corporate presence in the city of Houston.
Continental’s services towards the community were also encouraged and applauded by various quarters. Its record of contributing to various local charities is well known. Continental Airlines employs around 14,000 employees in Houston out of its 40,000 global workforce.
Experts from the aviation sector feel that a merger between these two airlines will make up for a biggest airline by revenues, leaving behind Delta Air Lines.
But Continental plans to slug it out alone in an industry where joint ventures seem to be the only option to stay profitable. Continental had earlier posted losses which were more than anticipated by analysts. The company suffered losses and was specially hurt by snowstorms and raised fuel costs.
