The career of Charlie Crist, Florida's former extremely popular Governor, is now on the brink of doom.
Crist says that he has no idea how this has come about, but places a large share of the onus on the economic downturn.
However, in perspective, the indications of his failure were many. Crist made many mistakes in his career. He alluded to the win of Macro Rubio of U. S. Senate straw poll as meaningless.
He was also admonished publically by GOP allies for endorsing President Obama's stimulus package. His decision to make Jim Geer as Florida GOP Chairman was also widely criticized. He also faltered in refusing to bring Geer in control.
"He's deader than the day before yesterday. I don't think there's any way in the world he can rehabilitate himself," former state GOP Chairman Tom Slade said.
It has also been reported that Crist's once high ratings have fallen below 50%. His fundraising has gone dry and he has lost support of his mentor, Connie Mack. He has been extensively disparaged by national Republican leaders and grass root activists.
There is nothing that can redeem the tarnished reputation of Crist. There is very little that can exonerate him. The only saving grace for him is to run for the impending U. S. Senate election as an independent candidate, bereft of party affiliations. All eyes are on him, to see whether he will continue to fight the election as a Republican candidate. He is to take the decision by coming Friday.
After many faux pas, it is time that the beleaguered leader, saves himself by fighting independently.
Crist's condition stands testament to the fact that the actions of politicians do not go unnoticed. They eventually come around to impinge on their career. They remain in the public eye at all times. A small false step will lead to major consequences.
