New York City Mayor’s Salt-Cutting Crusade Joined by Sixteen Corporations

Sixteen food corporations have planned to cut the quantity of salt in bacon, flavored rice and many other products, as part of a nationalized attempt, in order to lessen American's sodium consumption by 20%.

City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg made an announcement that, corporations, such as H. J. Heinz Co., Kraft Foods Inc. and Starbucks will give their commitment to the voluntary National Salt Reduction Initiative, which is a public-private enterprise that has been initiated by New York City.

Bloomberg said that salt is one of the important causes, that is accountable for high BP problem in people, which in turn, could lead to cardiac arrest or stroke.

Mark Broadhurst, Director of Corporate affairs for Mars Foods, stated that the firm would cut the salt in its Uncle Ben's flavored rice products, by almost 25%, over the coming five years.

Lanette Kovachi, Corporate Dietitian for Subway, stated that the sandwich chain, already, has cut sodium by 30% in its European outlets and is working on lessening usage of salt in its U. S. restaurants.

The salt cut initiative has set an objective of reducing the salt in 62 groups of packaged foods and 25 groups of restaurant foods, by 25%, over the next five years.
