Health experts and advocates have showed concerns over towards Canadian kids, including tots under the age of five, who spend a large proportion of their time watching TV, computers and video games.
They have blamed the parents to play as an important backing to this unhealthy practice because of their concerted effort, caregivers and others to get them moving more.
In recent years, much light has been shed on Canadian youth, with several private and public studies about an out-of-shape teenage population that is physically inactive facing a potential threat of suffering from medical problems later.
A group known as Active Healthy Kids Canada has, for several years, issued a report card on the physical fitness levels of Canadian young people, calling for inculcating a strict fitness regime on daily basis
"The report card reveals only 12 per cent of Canadian children and youth are getting the 90 minutes recommended for daily physical activity. Meanwhile, young people are continuing to devote considerable time to video games, computers and TV, accumulating six hours of screen time on weekdays and more than seven hours on weekend days," the report posited.
The issue needs immediate attention. Introduction of mandatory school gym classes, for all grade levels, can be considered. Also, providing free nutrition, fitness and lifestyle education classes at the community grassroots can pose wonderful results for everyone.
